First World War body armour tests. US soldiers displaying the effects of tests on body armour developed during the First World War (1914-1918). From left to right,the body armour shows the effect of pistol,rifle and machine gun fire. The US entered the war on 6 April 1917,playing a crucial role in helping Britain and France to defeat Germany and its allies. The US developed several types of body armour in this war. One that could withstand machine gun bullets was the chrome-nickel-steel Brewster Body Shield. These tests are being carried out by the US Army's Ordnance Department.
