Gas masks in WWI (1914-18). French sergeant and a dog,both wearing gas masks,on their way to the front line during the First World War. This war saw the first use of chlorine and mustard gas,and gas masks were issued to combat this threat. Dogs have been used extensively in wars. Their roles range from guiding blinded soldiers,to carrying messages,doing sentry duty,carrying ammunition and food,locating enemy outposts by smell,and locating wounded soldiers.
