Scheiner's sunspot observations. The German Jesuit astronomer Christoph Scheiner (1573-1650) was one of the first to observe sunspots (dark areas on the Sun's surface),doing so in 1611. This diagram, published in Rosa Ursina sive Sol (1630),includes notes in Latin. The diagram shows the progression of a series of sunspots over the surface of the Sun from 15th December 1625 to 7th January 1626. At bottom,a data table is given for the days on which observations were made. At upper centre, the IHS monogram and the inscription "In Collegio Romano Societatis" refer to the Roman Catholic Jesuit Order | |
