Planet drawings. Three drawing made by Sir John Herschel (1792-1871) of the planets Mars,Jupiter and Saturn. Herschel spent much of his life studying the stars, planets and nebulae. The drawing of Mars (top) was made on 16 August 1830,and shows the variation of surface colour once thought to be vegetation. It has since been shown that dust blown by Martian winds causes these shifting irregular patches. Jupiter (middle),drawn on 23 September 1832,clearly shows the belts of cloud in its upper atmosphere. Saturn (bottom) also has cloud bands in its atmosphere, but also has a spectacular ring system. The gaps between ring areas (black) are also seen seen | |
