Illustration depicting Robert Fludd's thermoscope (centre),an early air thermometer, drawn in the centre of a globe representing the universe. Fludd (1574-1637) was a religious mystic who sought to bring together the macrocosm of the universe with the microcosm, man. He believed that circling of the Sun around the Earth caused the circulation of air & blood in the body. A universal expansion & contraction affected both macrocosm & microcosm,& was visible in the thermoscope. The thermoscope consists of an air-filled bulb (top) connected to a reservoir of water (bottom) by a graduated tube. The air in the bulb expands & contracts with temp- erature, causing the water level to rise & fall | |
