Naval semaphore signalling. Sailor operating a semaphore signalling device on the battleship USS Utah. Semaphore is an ancient optical telegraphy method that was first systematically used over long distances in France in the 1790s. By the end of the 19th century, semaphore was being replaced by first electrical telegraphy, and then,in the early 20th century,by radio. Semaphore was still used when silent communications were required. The USS Utah was launched in 1909,serving in the First World War. It was sunk in 1941 in the attack on Pearl Harbour in World War II. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date up to the 1930s | |
