Early radio equipment. Pack horse, used by the US Army Signal Corps, carrying a chest of radio equipment. Photographed in 1916. Radio was invented in the 1890s. Early equipment was bulky and heavy, requiring horses or motor vehicles to carry it around. The US Army Signal Corps was founded in 1860,initially using flags and lights to communicate. By 1867,the Signal Corps was using the new technology of electrical wire telegraphy, and by the time of the First World War (1914-1918),was developing radio technology. The USA entered the First World War in 1917. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries | |
