Telegraph printer. Engraving of the telegraph printer invented by Thomas Alva Edison in 1870. This 'Universal Stock Printer' or 'ticker' was used to receive telegraph messages and print them out on a strip of paper or 'tickertape' (rolled up at top centre). Telegraph messages could also be typed and sent using the keys (lower frame). This device speeded up communications and was used on the stock markets to prevent any one group of people from controlling the trade in one type of goods. Edison (1847-1931) sold the design for $40,000 and used the money to set up an 'invention factory' where he was to make many other discoveries | |
