Columbus's ship the Santa Maria. The Santa Maria was the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus's (1451-1506) flagship during his voyages that discovered the New World. Columbus believed wrongly that Asia was only 5000 kilometres west of Europe . With the backing of the Spanish court he set sail westward in 1492 with three ships, the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina, and 120 men in. After five weeks at sea he landed on a small island in the Bahamas (San Salvador),believing he had found the East Indies. On this voyage he also discovered Hispaniola (Haiti) and Cuba. This woodcut was published in De Insulis inuentis (Concerning the Discovered Islands),which was based on Columbus's first letter from the West Indies,in Basle in 1493 | |
