Carpathia. Illustration of the Carpathia, the ship which answered the Titanic's distress call. The Carpathia,a 12,000 tonne liner, received a radio message from the liner Titanic in the early hours of 15 April 1912. The Titanic had struck an iceberg and was sinking. The Carpathia covered the 93 km to the Titanic's position at 31 km per hour (17 knots); her normal maximum speed was 25 km per hour (14 knots). The Carpathia rescued 705 survivors but the other 1503 people aboard died. Tragically, another ship, the Californian, had been much closer to the scene but had not received the Titanic's distress call because the radio operator was off duty and asleep | |
