Lana Terzi's airship. Historical artwork of the airship design proposed by the Italian priest and mathematics and physics professor Francesco Lana Terzi (1631-1687). Lana Terzi is considered the father of aeronautics, and his work Prodromo dell'Arte Maestra (1670) was the first to clearly state a mathematical theory of lighter-than-air flight. It is thought that Lana Terzi's ideas led to the development of the balloon and the first balloon flight in 1783. Lana Terzi's design involved thin copper spheres from which the air would be evacuated. Such vacuum spheres would not have worked, and the design was never built. Lana Terzi worked in Ferrara,Italy.
