It took off from outside the Palace of Versailles,Paris,France,on 19 September 1783,watched by King Louis XVI,Marie Antoinette,Benjamin Franklin and a crowd of Parisians. The balloon was lifted by hot air from an on-board stove burning wool and straw. In a cage hanging beneath the balloon, were a sheep,a rooster and a duck. The aim was to see if living creatures could survive such a flight. They were recovered safely and it was on 21 November of the same year that the first manned flight by balloon would take place | |
