Balloon flight. Coloured engraving of the Montgolfier brothers' hot air balloon beginning the first-ever manned flight at the Bois de Boulogne in Paris,France on 21 November 1783. The balloon was built by the French brothers Joseph (1740-1810) and Etienne (1745-1799) Montgolfier. It was made of paper-covered cloth and was lifted by hot air from a fire of wool and straw on the ground. After take-off an on-board brazier kept the balloon aloft. The balloon, which was 23 metres high and 15 metres wide, was piloted by Jean Pilatre de Rozier (1756-85) and the Marquis d'Arlandes (1746-1809). The flight lasted about 25 minutes and ended 9 km away near the city centre | |
