William Walker Martin (1860-1942),American cyclist,on a penny farthing bicycle. William Martin was an amateur cyclist who,turning professional in 1890,won a six-day race at Madison Square Garden,New York,in 1891. It was described as the long-distance championship of the world and he earned £1000 in gold for the victory. In December 1894 he won both the 10-mile and 20-mile world championships and between 1895 and 1901 Martin rode in every Australian colony,and was said to have won 249 races.
