19th-century diamond mining,Brazil. Artwork of African slave workers being supervised at a diamond mine in Brazil. Picks and shovels are used to break up the gem-bearing rocks. The broken rocks are sorted by hand and then washed in a pan using water. The pebble sized rocks that remain are inspected for diamonds. The overseers are ensuring that no diamonds are stolen, and a soldier is present to keep order. Artwork from Mines and Miners (L. Simonin,1868) | |
