19th-century step mining,Prussia. Artwork of miners excavating ore using the technique of step mining. This involves extracting the mineral- containing ore by carving a series of steps out of the rock. This artwork illustrates the technique of direct or descending steps,as opposed to reverse or ascending steps. It is used to excavate metal-containing ores. These types of ores need to be sorted and graded before use, unlike coal, which can be extracted using reverse step mining. This is the Stolberg mine in Rhenish Prussia (now a province of Germany).
