The arrows show where steam is admitted and where the steam exhaust points are. As with all steam engines,the steam was used to drive pistons which rotated a crankshaft,turning the energy of the steam in rotary motion,used to drive wheels,electrical generators or other devices. The rotation of the valves here is co-ordinated so that the movement of the piston itself (centre) regulated the amount of steam entering the system. This design dates from around 1912,but did not prove very practical
