Glass manufacturing industry. 19th century artwork of workers at a glass furnace, manufacturing cylindrical glass tubes. Before the introduction of methods such as float glassmaking, this was how flat panes of glass were manufactured. The cylinders of glass would later be sliced open, heated and then pressed flat. At the time, this was more reliable than attempting to directly produce flat sheets of glass. In contrast, float glassmaking floats molten glass in a liquid to obtain a flat, pane of glass of even thickness.
