Image of the Thames Embankment in London,UK,being built in 1866. This scheme replaced an ancient mud bank and allowed the installation of a sewerage system which discharged 19 kilometres away. The scheme was supervised by Sir Joseph Bazalgette,the chief civil engineer to London's Board of Works. Bazalgette (1819-1890) had previously designed the city's entire sewer system.
