Whisky distillery. Engraving of distillation apparatus used in 1810 to make whisky. Whisky is made by concentrating the alcohol content of beer by heating it in a still (labelled "B"). Alcohol is more volatile than water,so there is a greater concentration of it in the vapour than there is in the remaining fluid. The vapour passes out of the top of the still in a pipe and into a condenser,("E") which is a barrel of water. The vapour in the spiral pipe cools,condenses back into a liquid and runs out of the pipe for collection in a pot (G).
