The open-lattice tower (centre) was designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) and erected for the 1889 Paris Exhibition. It cost #260,000,used 15,000 wrought-iron sections and 2,500,000 rivets and,including its installations,originally weighed 9700 tonnes. Without its modern broadcasting antenna,it stands 312 metres high,and was the world's tallest man-made structure until 1930. During the early 20th century,the tower held laboratories for the study of astonomy,biology,meteorology,atmospheric pollution,as well as radio and television transmitters
