Drug research on human tissue. Technician's gloved hand using forceps to hold a microphysiometer containing human cells before a drug is tested on them. The cells are in a culture medium which enables them to survive outside the body. Behind is a monitor which displays the effect of the drug on the cells through changes in their pH,a measure of their general activity. Pharmagene, who are doing this research, believe that better results are produced by testing drugs for humans on human and not animal tissue. This idea is supported by animal rights groups.
