| Road construction. Laying of the top 'wearing' course of a road. A layer of bituminous asphalt is laid by the spreader just above centre. The spreader keeps the asphalt hot with a gas flame. A hopper (bottom) then spreads tar-coated aggregate on the surface. This is compacted using a heavy roller to complete the surface.
