Canal aqueduct. Illustration of the Ellesmere Canal aqueduct over the river Dee at Pontcysyllte,Britain, with a smaller bridge in the foreground. The aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop, was opened in 1805. Canal building flourished in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Barges used them to transport the materials needed to sustain the increase in production caused by the Industrial Revolution. The barges were efficient but travelled too slowly to meet the flexible delivery requirements of industry. The canal system was eventually superseded by the development of a railway network | |
