Bartholdi in the form of a woman holding an uplifted torch as a symbol of liberty. Donated by France,it was originally a symbol of republicanism, but it later became a symbolic landmark for immigrants arriving in the USA. Image taken by the Ikonos satellite on 8 June 2002 |
