Replacement town. Image 2 of 2. This is New Arkwright Town (built in 1995),near Chesterfield,England. It was built as a replacement for the old town of Arkwright (1897-1995),which was declared unsafe and demolished. The original Arkwright was a mining town of 160 terraced houses. In 1988,methane was discovered leaking from underground mine workings. 110 people from 56 homes had to be evacuated. In 1989,an exposed part of the coalfield ignited. A ten-year project of opencast mining was started to make the area safe. The old town was demolished in 1995,and this one built a few hundred metres away.
