The statue,which was originally known as Liberty Enlightening the World,is in the form of a woman holding a torch and a book. The figure is 46.4 metres tall and is made from copper plates riveted to an iron framework. It was designed by Frederic Bartholdi and constructed by Gustav Eiffel.
