Water industry. Worker observing an ozone disinfector unit being used at a waterworks to produce safe drinking water. The unit uses dielectric technology, where a spark of electricity across a gap (causing the glow seen here) breaks up oxygen molecules (O2) to produce the ozone molecule (O3). The ozone gas, which is passed through the water,is an effective disinfectant that sanitises the water by killing micro-organisms. The ozone also oxidises trace amounts of metals, pesticides and other pollutants, allowing them to be filtered from the water. Each unit uses 558 dielectric pipes and produces 8 kilograms of ozone per hour. Photographed at a waterworks operated by SMAT,the metropolitan water company of Turin,Italy | |
