Peeling paint on rusting steel. Rust (iron oxide) is formed from the reaction of iron with oxygen (oxidation) in the presence of water. Iron rusts naturally when exposed to the oxygen and humidity in air,but its formation can be accelerated by rain or particularly salt water. Steel is an alloy of iron and as such,is also vulnerable to rusting. Rust is extremely brittle and causes the surface of the metal to flake or powder. Therefore,if the metal is painted, the paint can no longer stick to the surface and peels off (as shown) | |
