Aircraft weather radar uses radio frequency ranges that interact strongly with water droplets in storm clouds: X-band (around 8 to 12 gigahertz [GHz]) and C-band (4 to 6 GHz),the latter providing better range but poorer resolution. Circular polarization of the radio waves is used to improve the interaction.
