Wear-resistant concrete. Engineer measuring wear on a prototype wear-resistant concrete, designed for resurfacing roads damaged by studded tyres in Iceland and other northerly countries. Global warming is causing the thick winter ice to melt from roads in Iceland. The studded tyres that drivers use in winter for increased grip are now destroying the road surfaces. This is generating asphalt dust, which may be cancer-causing. Linear voltage displacement transducers (across centre) measure the changing shape of the concrete as it is subjected to wear. Six prototype concretes made from cement and volcanic ash are being tested at Newcastle University,England | |
