MODEL RELEASED. Sign language translation system. Female sign language user has her movements duplicated by a virtual woman (or avatar) on a computer. This system can translate speech, for example of a shop assistant,or text, such as television subtitles, into virtual reality sign language for deaf people. Here, the positions of the signer's torso, arms, head, hands and face are recorded while she signs words. This provides motion-capture data that is used with a linguistic translation program, allowing a virtual woman to provide real-time sign language in the work place and at home.
