ENIAC digital calculator. Technicians working with the ENIAC device,a digital calculator that was built at the University of Pennsylvania,USA,from 1943-46. ENIAC stands for Electronic Numeric Integrator And Calculator. Although not a true computer,it is considered the second general purpose electronic calculator (after the British COLOSSUS). Designed by John Atanasoff and John Mauchly,ENIAC was originally intended for use in ballistics calculations. The wiring was used to create circuits between ENIAC's 18,000 valves, thus changing its 'program'. A true computer uses an electronically-stored program. Photographed in the Ballistics Research Laboratory, building 328. The man at centre is Glen Beck | |
