Micromotor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a micromotor - a minute electric motor etched onto a wafer of silicon. Two "microengines" at top left (green) turn a tiny gear (yellow),which is smaller in diameter than a human hair. This in turn drives a larger gear (red) through one revolution per second. Open spaces in the large gear transmit light intermittently, creating an optical shutter. Tiny brackets (green) prevent warping of the large gear. Micromotors could be used in a range of "nanotechnology" applications, such as microscopic electric drug pumps implanted in the body. Magnification: x28 at 5x7cm inch size | |
