Lasers in physics research. View of dye lasers in an experiment to study antimatter at CERN,the European particle physics lab. This equipment is used to study metastable antiprotonic helium,a helium atom where one of the electrons has been replaced by an antiproton. The lasers are used to manipulate the antiproton, either to 'shoot' it down into the nucleus so that it annihilates,or to make it turn within the atom's magnetic field. Typically there is only one of these antiprotonic atoms amongst 100 thousand billion billion normal helium atoms in the experiment. This laser technique will also be used to study antihydrogen atoms (a positron orbiting an antiproton) | |
