Bulb research. Laser being used to study a high- powered HBI lamp (centre left),a type of tungsten halogen light bulb. The bulb contains bromine and iodine gas. These gases bind to any of the light- generating tungsten filament that evaporates, eventually diffusing back to the filament where the tungsten is deposited. This extends the bulb's life and maintains its clarity by preventing the deposition of tungsten on its inner surface. The laser beam allows the chemical reactions occurring in the bulb to be studied by spectroscopy. Photographed at Siemens' Osram Sylvania Laboratory in Beverly,Massachusetts,USA | |
