Nuclear fusion research. JET (Joint European Torus) Tokamak device. The inner ring-shaped chamber can confine hot plasma for use in fusion research. It is situated in Culham,Oxfordshire,England. The actual torus housing is not seen as it is beneath a cladding of microwave heating, monitoring and experimental equipment. It is part of the EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) initiative to research & investigate the viability of fusion power. Nuclear fusion is the joining (fusing) of light elements to form heavier elements, which releases large amounts of energy. It is hoped that fusion will be a clean, renewable energy source for the future | |
