Nuclear fusion research. Interior of the JET Tokamak device at Culham,Oxfordshire,England. The ring-shaped chamber can confine hot plasma for use in fusion research. The JET (Joint European Torus) device is the largest Tokamak in the world. It is part of the EFDA (European Fusion Development Agreement) initiative to research & investigate the viability of fusion power. Nuclear fusion is the joining (fusing) of light elements to form heavier elements, which releases large amounts of energy. It is hoped that fusion will be a clean, renewable energy source for the future. Photographed in November 2001 | |
