Nuclear fusion research. Spherical ball of plasma (pink) inside the START device at Culham,Oxfordshire,England. The START (Small Tight Aspect Ratio Tokamak) device decreases the aspect ratio of the plasma, changing its shape from a torus (ring) to a sphere. This research, although concluded in 1998,has lead to further research involving spherical plasma being used to generate fusion power. Nuclear fusion is the joining (fusing) of light elements to form heavier elements, which releases large amounts of energy. It is hoped that fusion will be a clean, renewable energy source for the future | |
