Nuclear power station plans. Engineer's shadow on a set of diagrams for a steam generator to be used in a nuclear power plant. Various perspectives are seen, with a transverse cross-section (centre) and a longitudinal cross-section (bottom, the lower end of the steam generator is at right, the upper end at left). In use,it is a vertical structure over 20 metres tall. A steam generator is used in pressurized water reactors (PWRs). The pressurized water, heated by the nuclear reactor, enters the lower end. A complex system of tubing transfers the heat to a new volume of water that exits from the top end as steam, used to drive turbines to generate electricity.
