Using a personal radiation dose meter. Hands of a laboratory worker with a personal radiation dose meter (dosimeter) on the middle finger of his left hand. This is a finger glove (finger stall) type of dosimeter, designed to be worn over a finger, and under the normal glove,so that it is close to the radioactive materials being handled. Later analysis of the dosimeter will reveal the amount of radiation to which the worker was exposed. Here, the worker is using 32-P,a radioactive isotope of phosphorus. It is used primarily as a radioactive tracer in genetics to analyse DNA and RNA samples. Photographed in the UK | |
