Nuclear power patent. A figure from the patent application of Enrico Fermi and Leo Szilard on the invention of a 'neutronic reactor'. The patent was based on the design of the world's first atomic pile,CP-1. This was built at the University of Chicago's Stagg Field,and achieved its first chain reaction on 2 December 1942. The patent was filed in December 1944,but was not issued (as number 2,708,656) until 17 May 1955 for security reasons
