The Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory,New Mexico,in the post-war years. It began as a remote makeshift complex built during World War Two to provide facilities for the Manhattan Project, the American programme to develop the atomic bomb. The project was undertaken by a multinational team of engineers & scientists (headed by R. Oppenheimer) who worked under conditions of strictest secrecy from 1943-45. After the war Bradbury succeeded to the laboratory's directorship and it flourished as the centre of U.S. nuclear weapon research. Other projects dealt with more constructive practical applications of nuclear physics | |
