Solar power plant. Photovoltaic cells at a solar power plant in the Swiss Alps. These solar cells convert light energy from the sun into electrical energy. Each one consists of a sandwich of positively and negatively doped silicon, which generates electric current when sunlight falls on it. These cells are 10-15% efficient, and in this location 1 square metre of this type of solar panel produces 100-150 kiloWatt hours of energy per year.
