Traditional windmill and a ruined castle at Consuegra in La Mancha,Spain. This is one of a group of eleven windmills on a hillside 77 kilometres south of Madrid. These are reputed to be the windmills that Cervante's knight Don Quixote tilted at,believing they were giants. The windmill harnessed the power of the winds that drive across the Manchegan Plain to pump water or grind corn. The castle in the background was an important stronghold during the Reconquest of Spain and was the original seat of the military order of Saint John of Jerusalem | |
