Wave energy. The world's first commercial sea- based wave energy machine,Osprey 1,being towed to its offshore site at Dounreay in Scotland in August 1995. 'Osprey' stands for 'Ocean Swell Powered Renewable Energy'. Waves entering the broad base of the machine are channeled into a chamber. As the water rises & falls air is forced in and out of the chamber through turbines, which generate electricity. The structure is designed to generate 2 megawatts of electricity which are sent to the National Grid via a submarine cable. Unfortunately, due to manufacturing fault,Osprey 1 failed a few weeks after launch. However,Osprey 2 is already in development to replace her | |
