Nesjavellir geothermal power station in south-west Iceland. The four wells currently in operation here provide enough steam to drive a power plant producing 100 megawatts of exploitable thermal power and a back-pressure turbine generating 2.7 megawatts of electricity. The steam is piped from the boreholes to a condenser at the plant where it is used to heat cold water pumped from wells located 6 kilometres away on the shores of Lake Thingvallavatna. Finally the water, whose temperature is by now some 83 degrees centigrade,is sent via an insulated 27-kilometre long main pipeline for distribution around Reykjavik. It is used for space heating and washing | |
