Biofuel research. Citrus peel (here, lemons) at a food processing plant. This waste product is usually used as cattle feed, but it is now being investigated as a possible source for ethanol, which would be used as a biofuel. The ethanol is produced from crop residues by fermentation and other chemical processing of the sugar, starch and cellulose in the plant material. Ethanol and other biofuels can be used in motor vehicles as an alternative to fuel obtained from oil deposits. Use of existing food waste products avoids the deforestation needed to develop new land to grow biofuel crops. Photographed in the USA | |
