Oil products. Containers of crude oil and various products obtained from crude oil,on a background of a silhouetted oil refinery. An oil refinery is where crude oil is separated (refined) into parts called fractions. The hydrocarbons in oil vary in size, and as the crude oil is heated, the lighter fractions boil off first. These are arranged here in order of boiling point from left (lowest) to right (highest): liquid petroleum gas (a mix of butane and propane),petrol (gasoline),jet fuel (kerosene),diesel, lubricating oils, fuel oil,and bitumen. These oil products are used as fuels, industrial lubricants, and to make products such as plastics in the chemical industry. See T110/482 for a range of oil products in test tubes |
