Impact crater. Damage to a lead block caused during research into high-velocity small particle damage to satellites. A nylon plug weighing 79 milligrams (lower centre) was fired at the block at 4.89 kilometres per second in a vacuum. The plug has caused a large crater with a large amount of metal displaced. Results from experiments like this one allow more accurate interpretation of actual impact data from space. Protecting satellites from impact damage is very important,as dust and "space junk" impacts could potentially destroy an unprotected satellite | |
